The bedroom is where you start and end every day. You spend about a third of your life there – more than in the living room, kitchen or office. Yet we often furnish it in a hurry, as if it were only a place to sleep. A well-designed bedroom does much more: it helps you sleep better, unwind more easily and feel the warmth of your home.

At Pillovely we believe the bedroom is the most personal room in the home – where nobody judges and only you need to feel good. This guide shows you how to design a bedroom from scratch: planning the space, choosing colours and furniture and finishing it so you actually want to go back to it. No theory – practical ideas for real life.

Bedroom Ideas – Where to Start and How to Plan the Space

Good bedroom ideas do not start with the wall colour or the bed, but with a functional analysis of the room. Spend 20 minutes with a tape measure and a notepad – a step you must not skip.

Three key measurements

  • Floor dimensions – the length and width of the room in two places (walls in older buildings are not always straight).
  • Position of windows and doors – which way the door opens, where the light comes in, where the sockets are.
  • Ceiling height – crucial for floor-to-ceiling wardrobes and tall headboards.

Space around the bed

However small your bedroom, the bed needs room to move around it:

  • at least 60–70 cm of clear space on each side of the bed,
  • at least 50 cm between the bed and a chest of drawers or dressing table,
  • at least 70 cm in front of a wardrobe with hinged doors.

In a 12 m² bedroom these numbers decide everything. If you need to compromise, do it on the chest of drawers or dressing table, not the bed – the bed is the absolute priority.

A plan on paper before you buy anything

The first step is a scale drawing of the room. Mark windows, doors, sockets and radiators. Then cut out paper rectangles for the furniture (bed, chest of drawers, wardrobe, maybe a dressing table) and move them around until you find a layout that really works.

Five minutes of work that saves weeks of frustration. Only with a plan in hand is it worth looking at specific furniture – browse our bedroom furniture for beds, chests of drawers, bedside tables and dressing tables in a coherent style.

Small Bedroom – How to Create a Functional, Comfortable Room

Small bedroom design is a game of "less but better". In an 8–10 m² room every piece must make sense and every 5 cm of free space counts. The good news: a small bedroom is easier to design well than a large one, because there are fewer decisions to make.

The bed – the foundation of everything

In a small bedroom the bed takes up 40–60% of the floor. Choose wisely:

  • an ottoman bed with bedding storage – essential if you do not have a separate cupboard for bedding,
  • a low bed (up to about 45 cm high) – makes the room look bigger,
  • gas lift mechanisms rather than manual ones – if the storage is going to be used for years.

An example from our range: the Mevy upholstered bed has storage with 1000N gas lifts, a soft headboard and a minimalist shape – especially good in 10–14 m² bedrooms. See more in our upholstered and ottoman beds.

A wardrobe instead of a chest of drawers

In a very small bedroom a chest of drawers is often a luxury there is no room for. A better solution is a tall, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe with sliding doors that combines both functions. Sliding doors save 50–70 cm compared with hinged ones. See our wardrobes and walk-in closets.

Bedside tables you will not notice

Choose narrow bedside tables (up to about 35 cm deep) or wall shelves instead of full-size tables. Wall lights instead of table lamps free up the surface too.

Tricks to make a small bedroom look bigger

  • a large mirror opposite the window – twice the light,
  • light wall colours (ecru, warm cream, pale sand) that reflect light,
  • one focal point (an upholstered headboard or one coloured wall) instead of many small ornaments,
  • minimal decoration – the more things, the less room.

Bedroom Colours – Which Shades Help You Relax and Sleep Well?

Wall colour is a bolder decision than furniture – it surrounds everything and affects how you feel. In the bedroom it has one more job: helping you wind down for sleep.

Colours that help you wind down

  • Muted greens – sage, olive, bottle green, moss. Green is associated with nature and calm and works beautifully with natural materials and wood.
  • Warm beiges and ecru – versatile and soothing, they suit every furniture style.
  • Dusty pink and pale terracotta – warm, organic colours; romantic but grown-up.
  • Greige (a mix of grey and beige) – modern but warm, great with dark wood.
  • Deep navy and bottle green – as a feature wall behind the bed. A strong dark colour can feel cocooning if the rest of the room is calm.

Colours best avoided in the bedroom

  • Red, yellow and orange in large amounts – stimulating. Use them as small accents (a cushion, a picture), not on the walls.
  • Brilliant white with a cool undertone – looks sterile. A warm white with a hint of beige or cream is better.
  • Busy patterns on the walls – wallpaper with an active motif tires the eye.

The magic of the wall behind the bed

One strong wall plus three neutral ones is a classic that simply works. The wall behind the bed is the most important surface in the bedroom – you only see it fully when you walk into the room, so it can be bolder than the others. Great choices: dark green, navy, mocha or warm brown. See more in bedroom colours.

Modern Bedroom Ideas – Furniture, Lighting and Textiles That Work Together

A modern bedroom is not about trends but about conscious choices. Modern bedroom ideas rest on three pillars: well-made furniture, layered lighting and natural textiles. Together they create a room that looks good today and in ten years.

Furniture – quality over quantity

A modern bedroom does not need lots of furniture – it needs the right pieces. The classic set is:

  • a bed with a headboard – the heart of the room and worth investing in,
  • two bedside tables (or one plus a narrow console on the other side),
  • a chest of drawers – for underwear, jumpers and small items,
  • optionally a dressing table or reading chair, if space allows.

If you are undecided about the bed, a good choice for a modern bedroom is the Anemon divan bed – with storage, upholstered in Lambi fabric and on tall legs. Its light form makes the room look bigger. See the full range of divan beds.

Add a chest of drawers with a calm shape and a bedside table from the same design family. Consistency makes a huge difference.

Lighting – never just one lamp

A modern bedroom has at least three light sources:

  1. A ceiling light – for cleaning and dressing, in a warm 2700 K.
  2. Bedside lamps or wall lights – one on each side, for reading.
  3. A floor lamp or accent light in a corner – for atmosphere.

Never rely on the ceiling light alone. A single overhead light is office lighting, not bedroom lighting.

Textiles – the last 20% that creates 80% of the mood

  • linen or cotton bedding – breathable, ages beautifully and helps you sleep comfortably,
  • a wool or cotton throw – adds layers and visual weight,
  • blackout curtains or blinds – key for sleep quality,
  • a rug by the bed – a warm welcome for bare feet in the morning. See our bedroom rug guide.

One last trick

In a modern bedroom, "less is more" is not a slogan but a design rule. An empty stretch of wall, one strong frame, one plant, one lamp – often more than ten knick-knacks scattered around the room. Leave room to breathe. The bedroom should be a room where it is easy to stop thinking.

Jak urządzić sypialnię na poddaszu? Praktyczny poradnik aranżacji skosów

Sypialnia na poddaszu to wnętrze z charakterem. Skosy, belki i okna dachowe tworzą klimat, którego trudno szukać w zwykłym pokoju w bloku.

Styl vintage we wnętrzach to sposób urządzania mieszkania, w którym ważne są historia, faktura, forma i świadome łączenie elementów z różnych dekad.
